On paper it looks like a versatile, middle of the road sized lens that could fill some gaps between more specialized lenses and “hold you over” until you scratch together enough $$$ for a good one. I’ve since messed around down the different Sony lines of full frames like the A7siii and the A7riv… and I’m telling you, unless you’re a very specific type of pro, frowning at a monitor and zooming into every little corner looking for subtle differences, I wouldn’t dream of spending an extra $1500-2000 for the more specialized Sony’s. Like the name suggests, CameraBag (5) is an application that simulates the photographic qualities of five classic cameras using various filters, crops, and other techniques. Its built around the core principles and technology of CameraBag Photo, which was chosen by Apple as Mac App Of The Year runner-up. I can’t think of one scenario for either photo or video where you’d get “cornered” by the capabilities of your camera when showing up with this. I could attach it to the cold shoe on my primary underwater camera system housing and take excellent videos while taking photographs. CameraBag Cinema offers video filtering, color correction, and film emulation, all in a stand-alone package (which can be used alongside Final Cut, Premier, or any other NLE). It’s like Sony sat down in a meeting and said “okay, what specs do our new alphas need to be professional, but with ZERO overkill” and drew up this beast.

There’s other bodies that do specific things better (the “Rs” have more megapixels for the photo crowd, the “S”s have better video capabilities) but even for paid professionals grabbing stills and video, this thing does everything really REALLY well. The A7iii is the Sony “all around” champion.
